Storage Sustainability

There is a growing demand for environmentally friendly storage boxes. This is due to increasing awareness of the environmental impact of our usual day to day storage methods which traditionally involve use of plastic bags and cardboard boxes.

Plastic bags are a real problem and from a sustainability perspective should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Production of cardboard boxes needs trees with about 1 tree to create 150 cardboard boxes unfortunately sustainable forestry is globally not widespread (https://www.fpac.ca/) especially with significant losses of forestry due to human deforestation (https://eos.org/research-spotlights) and Wildfires.

So which material do you choose from cardboard or plastic?

Recycled cardboard is a good option for environmentally friendly storage boxes. Note that estimates show that a cardboard box used for transporting heavy items will after a few trips show signs of damage. If durability is an issue then a cardboard box is not so sustainable!

Use of plastic storage boxes is an option but these need to be produced in an environmentally friendly approach which must include long term durability and the ability to be recycled.
